In the summer of 2019, the Cab Calloway Foundation became aware of plans to demolish a building on the 2200-block of Druid Hill Avenue in Baltimore, Maryland, where Cab and his family resided during his childhood. In November of that year, members of the Cab Calloway Foundation traveled to Baltimore to view the building and meet with public officials to discuss plans for the site’s future. We were truly impressed with Druid Heights Community Development Corporation’s dedication to its community and sense of urgency about helping local children and neighbors. Thanks to their extensive planning and public engagement, a vision for housing and a green space for the community to enjoy will soon come to life.

In support of the DHCDC’s plan for their community’s future, the CCF has granted funding to develop a music program, in collaboration with the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, which will facilitate music lessons for students in Druid Heights. With the opportunity to learn from local music professionals, these children will be well on their way to developing self-esteem through their gifts and interests. We are thrilled to see this philosophy in action in the Baltimore community.
